I have been looking for a pad like this for some time now. While there are many sleep pads on the market for you to choose from hardly any were made specifically for a hammock. The temperature here in North Georgia has been cool but not cold with nightly temperatures dropping to around 35 degrees F. I want to get one more hike in but the end of winter and didn't want to buy an underquilt. I received the box yesterday and I am eager to test this thing out.
At first glance, it is very similar to car heat deflectors that have become so common amongst us hammocks. The real difference is the shape, polyester lining on the sides, 2 grommeted shock cords and hooks and overall quality. While I do like to do some of my own DIY, I first look at the cost savings to see if it is even worth it. At 34.95 for the XL version I couldn't see gambling with this item since I will be hiking in the winter to save 15 or 16 bucks.
I am 6'2" and as you can see in the pictures this pad great for people taller that 6'. It is a lightweight addition to my backpack and hardly noticeable at all as far as added pack weight is concerned. When you receive the box and unpack it, you will see that they have shipped it folded square. The large shoulder area is folded in and tapered toward the feet so it folds square. I take this same folding method, but instead of folding it into a square, I roll it just like any other pad. Then I put it back in the included mesh carry sack and attach to the back of my pack like any other sleeping pad. This seems to work great. The other method that they recommend is to place it into your pack length wise, with the shoulder side down, making a cone inside your back. Putting all your gear inside the pad and folding the top over your gear. I haven't tried that method yet but can see how it would be beneficial.
